The Arabs and the Portuguese were the first visitors during the medieval period. The island was uninhabited until the Dutch Republic established a colony in 1638, naming the island after Prince Maurice van Nassau.

The Dutch colony was abandoned in 1710 and five years later the island became a French colony and was named Isle de France. The strategic position of Mauritius became the fame as “Star & Key” of the Indian Ocean.

Mauritius was an important base on the trade routes from Europe to the East before the opening of the Suez Canal. The country became an independent state on march 12 – 1968.

 

The people of Mauritius are multiracial and multicultural and most Mauritians speak Mauritian Creole, English, French and Asian languages. The island offers a varied flora and fauna, many species are endemic to the island. Also the island is known the only home of the dodo bird.

Mauritius has a tropical climate and there are two seasons : a warm humid summer from November to April, with average temperature of 24,7 degrees Celsius and a relatively cool and dry winter from June to September with temperature around 20,4 Celsius.
